We insulate attics, walls, basements and crawl spaces for Mandan homeowners with cold rooms and big heating bills, and we do the same for local business owners.
Mandan is our home city, and two places most people here know are the North Dakota State Railroad Museum grounds in northwest Mandan, where the Mandan Historical Society also keeps a local history museum, and the Mandan Art Alley behind Main Street, between 1st and 2nd Avenue. The Art Alley has a self-guided audio tour of its murals and public art, often told by the artists themselves.
What we run into most on jobs here is the cold. The city's building rules plan for deep frost and heavy snow on the roof, so an attic that's thin, settled or leaky shows up fast in cold floors, a hot upstairs come summer and a bigger power bill. Plenty of the houses we work in are older, with attics that have been added to, patched and occasionally rented out to mice, so we check what's up there before anything new goes in. It's the same in-order attic work we bring to Bismarck and the other cities around Mandan.

Insulation contractor services in Mandan, ND
R&T Mandan Spray Foam Insulation is an insulation contractor in Mandan, ND, with 16 services for houses that have cold rooms, drafty corners or a power bill that climbs every winter. Price mostly comes down to what's already in the attic or crawl space and what shape it's in, how many gaps need sealing before any insulation goes in, how hard the space is to reach, and whether foam or blown-in loose fill makes more sense. The schedule depends on whether something has to be fixed or pulled out first and whether the job needs a permit and inspection. I'll give you your own number once I've seen your house.
Spray foam insulation
Spray foam goes on wet and swells into every gap, sealing air and insulating at once, which suits hard-to-reach spots and attics with ductwork.
Attic insulation
Hot upstairs in July and cold in January? We seal the attic's leaks first, then add insulation evenly out to the edges.
Blown-in insulation
We blow loose fill through a hose to top up an attic that's settled thin, getting it into the corners and around the wires.
Home insulation
For a house that's drafty all over, we look at the attic, walls, basement and crawl space and fix them in the right order.
Insulation removal
Old insulation that's been soaked or filled with droppings has to come out, because new material on top just buries the problem.
Crawl space insulation
Cold floors over a crawl space? We insulate the crawl space so the rooms above stay warmer underfoot all winter.
Wall insulation
Many older walls have little or nothing inside. We fill them so rooms along an outside wall stop feeling chilly in winter.
Air sealing services
Air sealing means closing the gaps around pipes, wiring and basement rims that let warm air leak out of a house all winter.
Basement insulation
We insulate basement walls and the wood rim along their top, where a lot of cold usually gets in, before you finish the space.
Closed-cell foam insulation
For basement walls and metal buildings where damp is a worry, closed-cell foam is the dense foam that blocks moisture as it insulates.
Open-cell foam insulation
Open-cell foam is the softer spray foam. It seals air and cuts noise inside walls and under rooflines, and costs less than closed-cell.
Commercial insulation
Shop or office won't hold heat? We insulate commercial buildings for local business owners and seal the leaks first, same as on a house.
Crawl space vapor barrier
We lay heavy plastic over a crawl space's dirt floor and seal the seams, so ground moisture stays put instead of rising into the house.
Vapor barrier installation
A vapor barrier is the sheet that keeps damp air out of your insulation, and we put it on the warm side of the wall.
Attic air sealing
Before any insulation goes up, we seal around can lights, the hatch and the holes where wires and pipes pass into the attic.
Retrofit insulation
Living in an older house you don't want torn apart? Retrofit insulation adds what's missing through the attic, crawl space and small wall holes.
What you get when we take the job
Leaks sealed before insulation goes in
Piling insulation on top of an air leak just hides it, and the new layer spends the winter fighting a draft. We close the gaps first, then lay the insulation as deep at the edges as in the middle, which is where a lot of attics come up short.
Problems found first, not buried
If I find a roof leak, old wiring or vermiculite, a pebbly old insulation that has to be handled carefully, I tell you straight and help you sort it out before we start. I'd rather stop and tell you than work around something that should have been fixed first.
Cleaned up from attic to driveway
Insulation work gets messy, so we clean the attic, the stairs, the rooms we walked through and the driveway before we go. The aim is to leave your house as clean as we found it, or a little cleaner. Given what we find in some attics, that bar isn't always high.

Insulation work, start to finish
Insulation questions from Mandan homeowners
Do I need to remove old insulation before adding new attic insulation?
Not usually, if what's up there is dry and clean, because new insulation can go right on top of it. Insulation that's been soaked or turned into a nest has to come out first, which is what our insulation removal work is for.
How do I get my house ready for attic insulation day?
Clear a path to the attic hatch and move anything stored around it, so the crew isn't climbing over boxes. If the hatch is in a closet, empty that closet, and let us know about pets so they can be shut away while doors are open.
Why is there frost or moisture on the underside of my roof in winter?
Usually warm, damp house air is leaking into the attic through gaps, or the vents along the roof edge are buried so the attic can't breathe. We seal the gaps and keep those vents clear when we insulate, and if a roof leak is the cause, I'll tell you so it gets fixed first.
Can you insulate an attic with a small hatch or the room over the garage?
Usually, yes. Tight hatches, low rooflines and the room over the garage just take more care, and they're often where a house runs coldest. I check how we'll get in when I come out to look.
Do we have to leave the house when you spray foam?
For spray foam, plan on everyone being out of the house for a while, kids and pets included. The foam maker sets a re-entry time, how long before you can come back inside, and we'll tell you yours before the job starts. Blown-in insulation is different, and most people stay home for it.
How do I take care of new insulation in my attic?
Mostly by leaving it alone. Keep boxes off it so it stays full depth, and take a look after a hard storm for wet spots, since a roof leak soaks insulation fast. If you see either problem, give us a call.
Do I need a permit to insulate my house in Mandan, ND?
Maybe, so ask the city, because its list of work that needs no permit names things like painting, carpeting and fences, not insulation. The Building Inspection office at 701-667-3230 issues permits for altering or repairing a building in the city and a zone just past its limits, requires one for residential construction over $2,000, and lists attic insulation among the inspections a permit holder arranges. If you're not sure about yours, ask me and I'll find out.
When does an insulation contractor need a North Dakota license?
When the job costs more than $4,000, the person doing the work has to hold a North Dakota contractor license. It's a state rule, so it applies in Mandan, Bismarck and wherever else you are in the state, and it's fair to ask any contractor to show theirs before you sign.
